Information about Pharmacy Technicians

The Pharmacy Technician Educators Council (PTEC)

1) The Pharmacy Technician Educators Council (PTEC) is an organization for educators of Pharmacy Technicians. Members from the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico meet once a year to discuss issues related to the education, training, and certification of Pharmacy Technicians. The 1995 meeting was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in July in conjunction with the AACP conference (American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy). In July of 1996 there will be another joint conference for PTEC and AACP members in Reno, Nevada.

PTEC members receive quarterly newsletters and a subscription to the Journal of Pharmacy Technology.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)

2) The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) offers an Accreditation Service to qualifying Pharmacy Technician Programs. At the PTEC annual general meeting in July, 1995 a motion was passed stating that PTEC strongly recommends that all PTEC members seek accreditation by ASHP for their Pharmacy Technician Programs.

National Certification of Pharmacy Technicians

3) The National Certification of Pharmacy Technicians is now a reality. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) was set up to provide a consolidated voluntary national certification program for Pharmacy Technicians. The PTCB is responsible for the development and implementation of policies related to voluntary national certification of Pharmcy Technicians. The first examination date was July 29, 1995. Exams are also scheduled for September and December of 1995.

Individuals who meet all eligibility requirements and who successfully pass the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam may use the initials "CPhT" after their names. Certification is valid for two years.
